In
January 2003 the people’s movement Ekta Parishad embarked on a month-long
padyatra (foot-march) through the state of Chhattisgarh. The state,
carved out from Madhya Pradesh in central India in November 2000,
is rich in mineral and forest wealth.
But
for the adivasi (indigenous population) in this region, independent
statehood has changed little. In the tide of globalisation, industrialisation
and tourism expansion the government has diverted land and wealth
away from the masses, while state and corporate muscle has polarised
age-old communities.
