How to Give

AVI's partners are scattered across India (see Partners map), what binds them is the philosophy underlying them.  All of them were started in India by contemporary Gandhian visionaries and are run by Indian organisations. The broad Gandhian tradition encompasses: village self-sufficiency; developing local economies through nonviolent change; and working with the most marginalised people.  Each group emphasizes different strands of this philosophy.  Key themes are:

Grassroots democracy. All of our partners bring communities together to decide their priorities and programmes. Some form village assemblies and women's groups and most partners (particularly NBJK)also encourage greater participation in the formal village level political structures, the Panchayats, both as voters and elected representatives.

Women's development is important for all of our partners. CRUSADE helps women to form, Self Help Groups, run their own savings and loans schemes, and provides training in health, literacy and advocacy.

Education for girls Lakshmi Ashram is an educational community for girls which follows a Gandhian basic education. It is largely self supporting and encourages women's development in its local area.

Organic farming KGSN provide training for men and women in organic farming techniques and multiple cropping on their home plots. It has enabled people to make best use of their land and has, in some cases, doubled their income.

Making Connections - Rural Links Action Village India (AVI) and West Devon Environmental Network (WestDEN) set up the Europe-India Rural Links programme in 2000 to promote a deeper understanding between the people and grassroots organisations of the two continents, and to encourage the sharing of ideas, information and working practices.
